CESSERAS

The Saint Germain chapel

Close to the Cesse valley, the site of the village of Cesseras has been frequented for thousands of years. The 6,000-year-old footprints and cave paintings discovered in the famous Grotte de la Coquille (Aldène cave), or the Cigalière dolmen on the Causse, bear witness to this.

The village now sits at an altitude of 85m and 430 Cesserassois(es) currently live there.
The lords of Cesseras built their feudal castle, whose ramparts are still visible, on the site of a Carolingian villa. The Saint-Germain chapel, built in the 11th century, offers a haven of peace shaded by pine trees, away from the village. Its slate roof, typical of medieval architecture in Languedoc-Roussillon, and its apse with Lombard stripes are the perfect representation of the richness and beauty of the first Roman art in Languedoc-Roussillon.
