LA LIVINIERE

La Livinière owes its name to the occitan word "vinièra", meaning "vine"

The birthplace of one of the very first village A.O.C.s in the Languedoc: Minervois-La Livinière

At an altitude of 130m, 600 Liviniérois(es) live in this village.

Here, vines have always played a dominant role, ever since the Romans.

Perched on a promontory, at the bottom of the last foothills of the Causse de Saint-Julien-de-Molières, La Livinière is also famous throughout the Minervois thanks to Notre-Dame-du-Spasme.

Situated at the entrance of the village, this church houses a 15th century stone statue of the failing virgin; on her shoulders are two hands that seem to support her.
In addition to the remains of the feudal castle, the church of Saint Etienne and its square domed bell tower, the covered market square and the old fountain contribute to the charm of this village.

A little bit of history

Nine kilometres to the west northwest of Olonzac, La Livinière has the privilege to have a communal wine appellation. The village is on a hillock on the edge of the plain, in the shape of a compact ellipse. It was formerly known as castrum de Lavineira or Lavinaria, whose name comes from the Occitan translation for vine. For ten years, it was the capital of a canton (1790-1800) and in 1881 had 1,200 inhabitants.
The village has a 12th and 15th century church, old houses and the remains of ramparts. Its cooperative cellar produces 24,000hectolitres and there is a distillery near the old chapel and the small park of Notre-Dame du Spasme.
