RIEUSSEC

A green and wooded commune

In the past, Rieussec was a place of passage between Minerva and Saint-Pons and depended on one, or the other, depending on the times.
As its name indicates, water is not the most common good in its territory. Indeed, "sec" in French, means "dry".
Despite this relative drought, the surrounding forests are green and welcoming, with an altitude of between 500 and 600metres providing the necessary coolness.
The habitat is very scattered: the commune has no less than 9 hamlets, and today it is a green and wooded commune which seems to contradict the origin of its name... Discover it, nestled in its small valley, not far from the Sainte-Colombe pass and the source of the Brian river.
Here you can enjoy a preserved nature where fir trees, holm oaks, fruit trees as well as heather and wild periwinkle.

A little bit of history

Rieussec historically and geographically belongs to the Haut-Minervois.
At the time of the Albigensian crusade, Rieussec and the neighbouring land of Boisset depended directly on the seigneury of Minerve. The land was therefore confiscated for crimes of heresy from the family of the Viscounts of Minerve and finally annexed by the King of France.
In 1789, the community of Rieussec drew up a book of grievances, which remains one of the few preserved from the former diocese of Saint-Pons.
After the Revolution, Rieussec and Boisset were administratively attached to the canton of Saint-Pons-de-Thomières.
